Can I Stucco Over Existing Stucco Finish – What is the Process?
Can you stucco over existing stucco? The short answer here is of course you can!—anything is possible in the wonderful world of home exteriors. The important thing to remember though is that you want to enlist a stucco specialist and/or company who has done this before, as there is a process associated with re-stuccoing, which if not followed carefully, can provide less than optimal results.
- First off, you want to go over the façade of your home very carefully. Yes, there are going to be small cracks here and there, that is natural as far as stucco is concerned. It is the larger cracks and loose or falling away pieces of stucco that your contractor need to attend to.
- You also want to have high spots, or particularly jagged points or ridges ground down in order to create a flatter, more uniform surface on which to apply the new stucco product.
- These areas once addressed should be swept free of debris and cleaned up. After that, the entire house needs to be cleaned and power sprayed to remove dirt, and any other such particles that may be clinging to the old stucco.
- Your stucco contractor will most likely, after the house is thoroughly dried (generally overnight), apply a bonding agent to the surface which will allow the new stucco to more effectively adhere and it also will help with any moisture issues.
- Then the process of applying the new stucco begins. This is usually accomplished with a trowel. The number of coats of stucco will depend upon the exterior of the home, the look you’re trying to achieve, and of course, your stucco specialist’s recommendations.
