Many people, when talking about these three structures, tend to use the terms interchangeably. In fact these are three very different things. Having built all of them, we can certainly attest to the benefits of each one. For those who need a quick primer on the difference between a pergola, trellis and arbor…keep reading!

Pergolas:

So what is exactly is a pergola and how does it differ from the trellis and arbor? Unlike its cousins, the pergola is designed to be a more structurally pronounced unit. Constructed generally of posts and supporting an open concept roof, the pergola is used to accentuate walkways, to put over top of patios or to enhance some other such outdoor entertaining space with its overall look and capacity to eventually support climbing plants—though not to the extent that a trellis or arbor can.

Trellises:

A trellis is composed almost always of some form of lattice work. This is intended to support the upward growth of plants and climbing vines. Usually single dimensional, it is seen commonly as a flat piece against a house or standing alone rooted in the ground in your garden or flower bed.

Arbors:

Arbors are the trellis’s big brother—meaning they take the trellis idea and transform it into a more comprehensive 3D concept. Creating a tunnel style effect or a dimensional archway, the arbor also involves lattice which again is conducive for allowing vines to climb and flora to fill in. Often used as a decorative piece, an entrance to a garden, an accent for a special occasion, arbors are certainly beautiful structures.
