Is this just a simple patio cover project?  Once a homeowner decides to start looking for a contractor for their home improvement project, they many times start to get the feeling that the project may be more involved than first anticipated.  This project is a textbook example.  The homeowner wanted a patio cover built.

At first, many people would think this would require no more than a good carpenter who may be “handy” in some other trades.  In truth, this project required framing, concrete, high-end carpentry, electrical, tiled roofing, stucco and painting.  Five skilled disciplines were needed as well as plans and permits!

Do you want to act as the General Contractor?

As a homeowner, you may gamble by choosing to be the general contractor.  This means seeking out all the skilled tradespeople for the project.  First you have to vet them for their competency in their trade.  As their employer you will be responsible for making sure they are covered by liability and workers compensation insurance per California law.  You will also need to coordinate all the trades to make sure they are done in the proper order.  And, you will need to do all this while meeting timelines and staying in budget.  All too often, this approach will end up costing more money and time than it would have if you had hired the right company to take the reins for you.  This is where hiring a good general contractor becomes crucial.  How many nightmare stories have we all heard about that project from hell?
