Can You Paint Exterior Stucco?

This is a question we get asked a lot! You’re tired of your home’s current color, you want a change, or perhaps the paint is fading and is past its expiration date as far as looks and freshness. Without completely redoing the exterior of your home, you want to find out if it is possible to paint exterior stucco. The answer: of course it is! And it just so happens that you have come to the stucco experts. From initial application to painting existing stucco, we have seen and done it all.

Some Things to Consider When Painting Exterior Stucco

One of the most important considerations when painting exterior stucco is the type of paint that you are going to use. Color aside, you want to make sure you get a species of paint that lends itself to the nature of stucco. By this we mean, a kind of paint that will allow for flexing, for accommodating the moisture of the stucco and for helping to prevent against cracks.

We always like to use elastomeric paint on our stucco related jobs. Basically this is simply a type of paint that is much heavier and denser than standard paint, thereby giving it much greater elasticity. This elasticity in turn works with the stucco rather than against it.

Another key issue in thinking about painting exterior stucco is the preparation. Prep for this type of painting task is essential. If the existing stucco is left dirty, if the bigger cracks and/or loose pieces aren’t addressed properly, you could end up with an eyesore. Not what you want when investing in a new paint job for your stucco.

And with any major project, having a contractor do the job who understands the necessity of using a bonding agent as well as the process by which multiple coats are applied is critical. Stucco painting requires a level of skill and understanding that comes with years in the business. Classic Home Exteriors has been painting exterior stucco for decades. We make sure to follow and adhere to every step and thus give you an amazing job the first time!
