Many homes in Escondido were built between the 60’s and 90’s and they did not allow for much natural light into the space.  A current trend for homeowners is to try to find a way to allow natural lighting into the home.  We had one couple reach out to us because a family member was too ill to go outside and he craved natural sunlight.  Another family said their home was too dreary and made them depressed because it was always so dark and gloomy.  So for homeowners who are living in Escondido and want some ideas on how to introduce natural light into your home, here are some ideas for you!

Add a New Window Opening

There are quite a few things to consider when tackling this type of project so it is important to reach out to a licensed general contractor to perform a project of this size.  By this size, we mean a project that will affect multiple trades.  At a minimum, this project will include drywall, framing, windows, and painting trades.  To get accurate pricing from your contractor, he will need to know if the wall you want to create the window opening in is load-bearing.  A wall that has electrical lines or plumbing lines running through it will also need some additional considerations.  There is a chance you will need to obtain permits for your project as well, depending on your home’s location.

Enlarge an Existing Window Opening

Some homes in Escondido have small window openings and homeowners want to simply widen the existing window.  Changing the rough opening so you can enlarge your window is a great way to add light to your home.  It is also a great way to equalize a newly remodeled space.  When talking with your general contractor about enlarging an existing window, ask about your options for going taller as well as wider.

Add a New Door Opening

Homeowners in Escondido who want to add a new door opening are popping up as well!  Ironically some homeowners are moving into houses where the previous owners added an addition but did not add a door to reach outside.  Many customers ask us to create a door opening so they can add a french door opening to their rear yard.  Much like adding a new window opening, it will be important to consider whether or not the wall is load bearing and/or has plumbing or electrical lines running through it.

If your home is dark and dreary, perhaps creating a new opening in the existing wall is one way you can create some natural light in your home.  It is certainly less expensive than finding a new home and much more effective than using a lightbox.[su_quote]I like having a lot of sunlight because it helps me wake up and I don’t get depressed in the winter[/su_quote] ~Dylan Lauren
